The Sweet Taste of Total Victory
Just found out that the radio documentary "Working With Pain," which I did some reporting on, won the national grand prize in its category from Collegiate Broadcasting, Inc. I am very proud of this piece. I contributed inteviews with cleaning and technical staff of NYU. The show was produced by the amazing Linda Catharine Blake. I will try to get audio of this up on the web in the next couple of weeks. And thanks to my interviewees. You know who you are.

Swap-O-Rama

This is an event created by Wendy "No Bush," Tremayne. If I'm in town, I will be there with a bag full of rags.
________________________________________________________
Wendy Says:
Sunday December 5th @ 5pm
Williamsburg Brooklyn. Email Wendy for directions.
This event is already too big for my apartment. Bring yourself, bring a friend but please dont post on any lists (Wendy said I could post it here though:).
Have you noticed that we live in a time of extreme surplus? I'm sure you've seen the giant storage places that line the highways, not to mention the mountains of totally useable stuff that is heaped into garbage piles on the street each week. When you consider the fact that we're burning through energy and resources to manufacture all this crap and then we dump it into landfills at an incredible rate it becomes pretty clear that we dont need to buy, we need to recycle!
It's time again to retire our unloved clothing and accessories and swap them out for new free duds. Participate in the lovely cycle of reuse. Save money, save the planet and have a bunch of fun while your at it.
Here's the way it works... dig through your closet to find your unwanted items: bought but never worn, purchases made while thinking "ill fit in to this one day," shopping mistakes, well worn and loved items that have exceeded their stay in the closet, and unloved gifts held onto out of obligation. Bring them to Swap-O-Rama-Rama and add them to a collective free pile. On cue everyone is invited to dig through the mass in search of new favorites. Everything is free.
What to bring to the swap: Clothing in season and accessories. That includes jackets, wallets, hats, pants, shirts, skirts, shoes, gloves, belts, accessories, jewelry, sunglasses, bags, costumes, lingerie, pjs etc.

Protean Poochareon Power

Robot herder, media designer, and all around art powerhouse, possessor of protean powers, Ann Poochareon will be guest blogger at Eyebeam Atelier's Reblog from now until December 12. I can already feel the tectonic plates of the blogosphere shifting in expectation of Ann's impending reblogging frenzy.

Sometimes Life Just Kicks You in the Nads...Hard

This is a watercolor I did that attempts to convey that feeling. It's actually a feeling which I have evaded for several years. I'm trying to develop a kind of spiritual cup to protect my self from the cruel foot of fate.

Muslim Awareness week!
Actually, it's Islam Awareness Week, not Muslim Awareness Week. My bad. Anyway, it's that time of the year again. How aware are you of the Muslims around you? This week, be extra specially aware of them in all their Muslimness. Did you even know that Ramadan just ended? Do you even know if those important Muslims in your life are Shia or Sunni? Do you even know what "Allahu Akbar," means? No it does not mean, "I'm going to blow myself up and take you with me." Remember, if you really care, it's time to be aware.
A good first step is to assess your knowledge by taking the Islam Quiz.

24in48
3 and a half hours left in "Hello, can you see me?" That's Lia Bulaong's project: twenty four people in NYC cel phone photoblogging to one site for 48 hours. In addition to the experience of being able to follow 24 peoples' experiences as they move through life in the city for two days, it was super fun to be part of. I wasn't one of the camera wielding participants, but I hung out with one of them, Keith Porteous, for an hour, and it was a good time. Kind of felt like we were part of some big game. And it greased the rails of our social interaction since we'd hardly ever hung out one on one before. The photographer were selected as far as I can tell, from people within Lia's (extensive) social networks. I think it would be spiffy to do it with a really disparate group representing the crazy age, economic, and ethnic variety of New York City. Like a Haitian 12 year old, a Pakistani cab driver, an old Ukrainian lady in a rest home, etc. Or to do it w/different subcultures. Say a bunch of Middle School Kids in Flatbush. Someone on Lia's blog already posted her intent to do something in another context:
"....I myself am working on a similar concept and have been toying around with using these ideas in a nursing home."
Doesn't that sound rad? I would so check that out. This kind of stuff gets my voyeuristic tendencies all in an uproar. More!

A great place to hear some soulsational music, see some old friends, and get hammered, I mean sip a civilized beverage. Hope to see ya there!

The Comedy Gymnasium

Returned to the open mic at the Underground Lounge. Last time I pretty much read my stuff. This time I mostly did it from my head. This led to some crappier segues, but better connection to the audience. Just like last time, I saw some great talent. Also saw this actor guy who went up there for a lark with nothing prepared and just bombed. That was validating. See, this IS hard. Anyway, folks were friendlier this time. Chatted with Geoff Kole, who runs the evening and Rock who guest emceed, and who gave me a few tips. My favorite part of the night is when this professional comedian explained to some non comedians in the audience "Hey this is just the gym for us. And I just dropped a couple of weights on my feet." This place is a great work out your comedic muscles.

WYSIWYG Interview on Gothamist
Nothing gets the narcissistic juices flowing like a mention on a mega media juggernaut. I was mentioned by the super producer of the WYSIWYG Talent Show, Chris Hampton, on Gothamist yesterday. I will be performing in the all musical "Happy Goddamned Holidays" show December 14 at P.S. 122.

Party Like a Classical Music Star?
After reading a recent article in the New York Times about "rockism," the elevation of rock music above all other genres, I started to think. Why does everyone want to party like a rock star (groupies, hotel destruction)? What's so great about hotel destruction anyway? Wouldn't it be just as fun, if not more fun, to party like a rap star (champagne, booty)? A country star (Budweiser, apple pie)? A bluegrass star (moonshine, whittling)? A reaggae star (buds, beef patties)? An R&B star (wine coolers, backrubs)? These all sound good to me. It's time to broaden our party aspirations.

Underground Lounge Open Mic
Did the Underground Lounge Monday night open mic. Great little room. I was the 15th of 16 comics. There were some great people. It was really cool watching how people develop new jokes. Most of the crowd knew each other already, so there was a lot of back and forth between the performers and audience. At one point, an audience member critiqued a guy on stage's joke and they had a minute long conversation about how to improve it. I was spotted as the new guy early on. After that, everyone directed their material at me. I guess they saw me as the nearest thing to a genuine audience member in the room.
I recorded my set w/my laptop, and everyone was making cracks about how ostentatious it was. Maybe time to find some less conspicuous recording device.

Time to Exhale
I'm happy I helped get out the Kerry vote in Pennsylvania yesterday. It would have been even better to have gone to Ohio. I grew up with Reagan and Bush the First in the White House, so I'm used to living with administrations that I disagree with. The political character of this country will not change overnight to be the way I want it to be. This will take a long time. Meanwhile, W. is god's gift to humorists, so a guilty little part of me is happy to still have him around to poke with satirical sticks.

Republican Anthem
I've entitled it the "Word Mangled Scammer." Download the MP3 here. Feel free to pass it around. Just attribute it to me please. Recorded through the built in speaker on my laptop in my bathroom. The rest of my third floor Manhattan apartment is too noisy.
