Nine Year Olds Rule

These are drawings by two nine year olds that I teach. They drew their hands from observation, using techniques inspired by Dr. Betty Edwards, who wrote the seminal art book Drawing On the Right Side of the Brain. In case you are wondering, the cross hairs help students gage distances and and angles.

Brain Glue

I was just rummaging through some old papers and found this old comic I made back in the mid 90's, "Brain Glue," a self published. photocopied, hand stapled, labor of love. Just thought it would be nice to document it online. I was so psyched to have my genius recognized by James Sturm, the comics reviewer for the Seattle alternative weekly, "The Stranger." See the review below for the laudatory details.

Me and Ed

Bumped into former NYC mayor, Ed Koch at the Dinosaur Barbecue. Although Koch is pro-death penalty, and pro-Bush, and I am not, both he and Jonny Goldstein agree that Jewish guys are hot.

Piano's Gig

Had a blast emceeing Keith Porteous' Gig at Piano's last Friday. I think I won the "Most Hideous Outfit in Lower East Side Award" for the last week, an accomplishment I'm proud of.

(Photos by Matthew Belanger)
The lovely and talented Keith Porteous wails her sultry melodies to the assembled masses. Nice to see Marianne Petit, accordionist, artist, and Jonathan's Throbbing Boil Fan Club President in the audience, along with master photographer, Matthew Belanger.

Marc Maleh's Birthday Insanity

I had some freakin' awesome French Toast today, made by Bosnian Bombshell Tea. She fried it in a cup of olive oil. If that is what Mediterranean cooking is, sign me up.

I whipped a look together and headed to Ace Bar.

Where I found Marc Maleh scopin' out the ladies with a perverted old guy in a weird outfit.

Mark, Chris Dugan, and me.

I bumped into Vena Chitturi and Chris Dugan and we threw down some crazy ITP gang signs. In the course of the conversation we talked about ambulances, the role of alcohol in British culture, and something so unspeakably wrong, I can't talk about it here.

More ITP gang signs.

Got home to John and Tea who proved to me that reading IS cool after all.

WYSIWYG Talent Show, PS 122

(photos by Dan Rhatigan)
In case you can't tell, I have a tambourine strapped to my leg as I am percussively tongue clicking Jingle Bells. Chris Hampton assisting on the mic. I also did a number where I pranced around with a butcher knife while playing Silent Night on my nose flute. If anyone has pics of that, please send them my way.

The Show: I loved it. Very gay, which I always like. Phoebe Kreutz almost made me cry with her funny but strangely moving songs. Dan Fishback was funny as hell singing a Christmas song in Yiddish and imploring the government to not only recognize gay marriage, but to create a free gay dating service. Jessica Delfino was horribly un-PC, and hilarious, Members of the Gotham Gay Mens Chorus layed down some lovely classical Christmas melodies, and the Hazzards, while hoarse throated from their previous night's gig, rocked with Ukeleles, a drummer, and a real life harp. My fave of theirs was their cover of an 80's hair metal tune. Thanks to Chris Hampton, Dan Rhatigan, and the other folks who put this together. And it was awesome to see former Jonathan's Throbbing Boil frequent guest, Quin Charity, and the lovely and persistant Tali Padan in the audience, along w/Tali's friends. Thanks for coming out and supporting Jonny Goldstein Fortnight. More pics of the show here.
The Aftershow: Had drinks with audience and performers. Got to talk to Chris a bit which was cool. She is from the town Bill Clinton really grew up in, Hot Springs, Arkansas, which has a storied history as a seedy cesspool of sin. Apparently he moved out of Hope when he was a little kid. Also crossed paths with Dennis "Dodgeball/Teendrama," Crowley, a true multimadness mogul in the making. Met some nice WYSIWYG fans who have blogs. I tried to find their blogs later, but didn't write 'em down so if the Haitian woman and Alext are out there reading this, send me your URL's so I can check 'em out.
The After-Aftershow: Went into Crif Dogs to grab a juicy weenie and who did I see but Jessica Delfino and a couple of WYSIWYG groupies watching Pirates of the Caribbean. I vote Crif Dogs for future after parties. They have beer, dogs, and ambience. What more do you need?
Back at the Apartment: Talked to Sully who was stoked about the updated Creamsicles web site which will go live soon. We got to talking about gay-ish scenes we have been involved with over time and he told me some stories about when his 10 piece funk band used to play at the Limelight and set their instruments on fire EVERY WEEK. Must have gotten expensive.

The masses lined up along the balcony of Coles Gym to devour the specacle. Those in the front devour wine and cheese

Media, art, and technology luminaries packed the front rows.

I address the masses. Thanks to Balachandar Enterprises for lending me the tux.

Zack Kahn's website is full of painfully funny prank phone call recordings and home-made videos. My favorite phone call is Girl Scout Cookies. My nomination for best Zack video is Zack's Favorite Drinking Games, with Ant Farm, a close second.

PowerSuit
The power suit is a set of technology embedded coveralls which enable the wearer to trigger digital media, wirelessly, in conjunction with public speaking, teaching, and performance. The wearer presses points on the suit, triggering buttons which signal a microcontroller to send out signals which are transmitted via radio to a receiver which sends the signals to a multimedia application, Max/MSP/Jitter, which triggers the correct audio or visual file, which are played on a visual display or sound system. In addition to the media triggering buttons, the suit has two buttons with which the wearer can move forward or backward to different selections of media files. An earlier version of the suit used a Nintendo Power Glove to trigger media, but this was phased out in the current version. I ended up using the suit more for audio.
I created a short comedy routine, called "Jonny in the Machine," in which I, via the suit, communicated with my future self whose consciousness was uploaded to a bunch of buggy servers in the year 2099. Thus far, I have performed with the suit at NYU, Washington Square Park, Neo(Con)ey Island, Salem College, and public schools in New York, California, and Colorado.
For a more exaustive documentation of the process of developing the suit, as well as the writing of "Jonny in the Machine," visit the PowerSuit blog. For a videoclip of my Thesis presentation, including a demonstration of the suit, click here.

This is from a performance in Shirley Recital Hall at Salem College in Winston-Salem North Carolina. I was not controlling the organ in the background with the suit, but maybe someday...

The PowerSuit 1.0 which used a hacked Nintendo Powerglove as one of the controllers. In addition to triggering audio, I triggered video clips on the monitor behind me. This version of the suit was created, by myself, Marc Maleh, and Quin Charity. In this iteration, the suit could not switch between groups of media files.

This shot is from a performance at an event protesting the then impending Republican National Convention in New York City.

I have used the suit as a catalyst for discussing wearable technology in public schools in New York, North Carolina, Colorado, and California. This shot is from a middle school in Longmont, Colorado.

Electrosquash
Just when you thought it could not happen, Jonny Goldstein Fortnight just got even more exciting. This time, the project is Electrosquash, where art and sport collide. In Electrosquash players are wired up and their movements and sound control audio and video output. The masterminds of the project are Jamie Allen, Emily Conrad, and Matt Culliford, all second year grad students at the Interactive Telecommunications Program. I will play an emceeing role. To get a taste of the project, check out their quicktime movie. Electrosquash takes place at Coles Gym, at the corner of Mercer and Bleeker Streets right near the Astor Place and Broadway Lafayette subway stops, at New York University, on Saturday December 11, 7PM. This one will truly be for the people, so if you are a person, I predict you will enjoy it.

Crocheting Comedy and Creamsicles at the Knitting Factory

I warmed up the crowd with a little stand up. I got some good laughs and elicited some intense groans. We had great visuals, by Doctor Mojo. The band, The Creamsicles, rocked. And the people came out in force to support us. Thanks for everyone who showed up. I have a feeling we'll back soon.
