Monotheisists Declare Truce

Nothing unites quite like bigotry. It took the upcoming World Pride parade in Jerusalem to get senior religious figures from the Christian, Muslim, and Jewish faiths together in one room agreeing about something. They all called for the Israeli government to block the scheduled celebrations from being held in the holy city. See, we can all get along after all!

Erzi and Jonny #3

eandjcrowdlantern3.jpg
Identity obscured to protect the guilty.

Just got back at our third show at our new Village Lantern location. Had a good house. Lots of comics and several honest to god real audience members who just came to enjoy the show. Erzsi and I are still working out some of the quirks of this venue, like the fact that it's hard for us to sit next to each other since I have been over by the sound board. I think I can take care of that by bringing an extra long cable. Anyway, we'll keep playing around with it until we get it.

That aside, heard some great stuff from Bob Bell, Angry Bob, Geoff Kole, and many others. This one comic who will remain nameless had a strong set and then managed to repel all the comics by sticking the mic and the mic cable down his underwearless pants. Yeek! Too bad, 'cause he had a good set and that became the focus, instead of the rest of his very funny act.

I busted out my ritual ram's horn to consecrate the evening, and I can say unreservedly, shofar so good. Tune in next week for more Erzsi and Jonny excitement. It's every Tuesday night, 167 Bleecker Street, Village Lantern, 10:30 until late. Buy a drink and watch comedians sculpting comic masterpieces as you behold in wonder. Hope to see you there.

Freelance Blues, Part 1

Watch video

Part of the freelance existence is dealing with clients who choose not to pay you after you have worked for them. This video is my attempt to turn pain into redemptive art. Enjoy. And feel free to share your own freelance nightmares as comments, emails, your own blog entries, podcasts, or best of all, as web videos. What do your freelance blues sound like?

Diary of a Coatcheck Boy

diaryofacoatcheckboy.jpg
Loki Kevorkian shares the seedy details of life as a Big Apple coat check boy. It is not pretty. Dave Alpert, John Sully, and I were astonished by the sordid anecdotes Loki spun. You too will be astonished if you dare to watch this jonnygoldstein.com exclusive video.

Disposable Men

disposable men
Originally uploaded by jonny goldstein.
I drew this Mind Map while soaking up a presentation of the technology and processes involved in making a multimedia theater piece called "Disposable Men," a production which played with the troubling, complicated, fascinating history of the way black men are perceived in American media. The substance and the technology in this piece were intense.

On the technology side, the Gertrude Stein Repertory Theater, who worked with James Scruggs, the writer and artist who conceived of the piece, provided the Media Beam. The media beam is a method of controlling the position, size, and skew of a data projection, in real time. In the bit they demonstrated to us, they used the media beam to project onto Scruggs, who wore a big white costume that covered his whole body, including a big flat white area for his face. So picture a montage of eyeballs and mouths projected onto Scrugg's face, without that projection bleeding onto other surfaces. The result was a kind of monster. In disposable men, Scruggs looks at the parallels between Hollywood monsters and American media portrayal of black men. I would have loved to have seen the whole production, but it's over now. If it is ever revived, I will go see it, and so should you if you want to see some adventurous, disturbing, riveting, theater.

Rocketjonny

If you have not yet checked out Rocketboom, you should. The Rocketboom crew puts out a quirky, geeky, stylish three minute web video show five days a week. I am an unspeakably rabid fan, so I was so happy when they spliced me into today's show. Check it out here. I'm towards the end of the piece, but don't skip ahead, the first part is educational and inspirational.

Forget Watergate, this is Yanni-Gate

Click here to watch the movie.

My alter ego Yanni Goldthtein, Holistic Healer, visited Christo's Gates installation in Central Park. Despite the cold weather, he maintained good cheer as he channelled the prodigious holistic energies that were flitting around the park that day. As Yanni would say, "Enyoy yourthelf!"
