John Edwards Starting Videoblog
Former VP candidate John Edwards, who has been podcasting for a little while now, will be videoblogging, maybe as soon as this coming week. Rocketboom reports that Edwards will be starting his own videoblog, and even more exciting will accept video questions from the public and respond to them on his vlog. I don't think I'm going out on a limb to say that this will be a huge milestone in both the videoblog and political world. So far, only smaller time political players have created videoblogs, like Boston City Councilman John Tobin and NYC Public Advocate aspirant Andrew Rasiej. It was only a matter of time until bigger fish got into videoblogging. Videoblogs make so much sense as a political tool. I'm happy Edwards is alert enough to recognize that. Now, I hope he doesn't start everything off with, "You know, my daddy worked in a Mill."

Finger Fun
Watch video Size: 3 megs. Format: Quicktime
I caught Jessica Delfino and a filthy clown having some finger fun one languid night on a moored tugboat last week. We had just finished an always enjoyable Ask The Robot gig and were feeling frisky. Parental discretion advised.

Wedding Rings
Watch video
Length: 1 minute Size: 7.9 megs, Format: Quicktime
Amid all the logistical maneuvers of our wedding, this one was one of the most fun, partly because the it just was, and partly because the jewler is my bride's brother, so it was very comfortable.

Chelsea Versus Nick
So I sent a link to the contagious media video I made to the panelists. Two replied. Chelsea Peretti's response was succinct. The message space had one word: "Nice." Nick Denton's reaction was a little longer: "This, at least, will certainly *not* be contagious."
So who is right? Chelsea or Nick? We report, you decide.

And the Robot Will Tell You...
It's time for another round of Ask The Robot, a techno infused performance and art event that takes place on a moored tugboat next to Chelsea Piers. I'll be opening the show with a little robotically infused stand-up. It's tonight. Here's the details.

Showdown low down
Watch video
Length: 3 min 10 seconds, Size: 14 megs, Format: quicktime
Shot this video at the Contagious Media Showdown at Eyebeam last Thursday night. The Showdown is a contest to see who can create the website that gets the most traffic within a three week period. Check in to see how they are doing. Jonah Peretti moderated a panel on the opening night which included James Hong (co-founder of Hot or Not), Chelsea Peretti (humorist, co-creator of blackpeopleloveus.com), Jeff Mack (Alexa Internet), and Nick Denton (founder, Gawker Media). They screened all of the entries to the cheers and jeers of a lively crowd.
While interviewing Ricky Van Veen, (Editor collegehumor.com) on the sidewalk outside Eybeam, I Met some contagious competitors, like Jill Walker and Scott Rettberg who worked on Showdown entry 60 Second Stories. Scott declaimed on his blog "...It’s time for the stainless steel rat of story to crawl its way into the cesspool of contagious content." Yick! Time for my bath.
After the event, some fellow ITPians and I went and sucked the nectar out of soup dumplings while handicapping the competitors. Don't worry guys, I'll bring more cash next time.

Video Right Here
I just got linked to as a videoblogger from Jill Walker who is in the contagious media competition, and I realized I have no fresh video posts up. So just in case you came from there and are curious about my videoblog insanity, click here.
I'm delighted that I inspired her to start getting video on her blog. Now she really ought to go to freevlog.org to see how to maximize her vlogging efforts.

Bagel Bikini Bender
I had the pleasure of Rabbinically officiating a Burn Mitzvah at the Gershwin Hotel. The kids were nice, but I was shocked, shocked, at the outfits they were sporting. I mean, who eats plain bagels anymore?Posted by Jonny at 01:40 PM | Comments (0)

Contagious evening
Spent the evening at Eyebeam for the kickoff of the Contagious Media Showdown. It's a contest for people to create the kind of websites people will want to forward to their friends.
I liked these ones, plus a few more which I'll put up when I have time:
cryingwhileeating.com
delivr.net/
farting saucers
blogstartheater
mo'F'naldos
Anyway, they had a star spangled panel of contagious media mavens, including Nick Denton, founder of Gawker Media, James Hong, co-founder of Hot or Not, Chelsea Peretti, comedian and co-creator of blackpeopleloveus.com, and her brother, moderator Jonah Peretti, who let loose upon the contenders for this three week contest. Also in the house was Ricky from collegehumor.com, one of the guys who runs thefacebook.com, Corey Arcangel, Yuri Gitman, John Geracci, Lia Bulaong, and and various other interactive media machinators. Also talked to some cuties who are starting a wholesale chocolate business. Shoulda got their cards. I liked several of the contagious projects, and I enjoyed seeing the range of attempts.
The thing I was most pysched about was that I talked to Chelsea Peretti told her how to make her blog into a vlog. She seemed genuinely into it, especially when I told her about the Internet Archive being able to host her video for free.
I got some good footage. We'll see if I ever have time to edit and upload it.

I am so mad
What a load of feces. A good friend of mine was arrested and thrown in jail last night because she was in the wrong place at the wrong time without ID. She was coming home from Manhattan to Brooklyn late last night. As happens late at night, there were several homeless guys sleeping in the subway car that she was on. Cops came in and arrested them for sleeping on the train and her for having her feet up on a bench. They might have let her go if she didn't have ID, but she didn't, so they cuffed her, mocked her, abused the homeless guys, and booked them.
She spent the night in jail, cuffed. They let her go this morning with a court date in June.
What kind of country are we living in?

Good to Be Back
Had a little reunion with fellow interactive telecommunicators at New York University. Caught up with Jon Marcel, Quin Charity, Jessica Josephson, Evan Raskob, James Claar, Carlyn Maw, Dennis Crowley, Alex Rainert, Karen Bonna, James Robinson, Ahmi Wolf, and bunch of other sparkling social technology innovators. I'm a little mixed up as to who was there, and who wasn't as I'd seen some of the same crowd at the ITP show earlier. Dennis and Alex looked pretty drained after what must have been a pretty intense couple of days following the news that their company had been acquired by Google. Success ain't a walk in the park. Or maybe it is a walk in the park, only it's when you have hay fever. It's beautiful, but you sneeze a lot and your eyes are itchy.

I Love Baile Funk
I love this album, which I happened upon a couple of nights ago when John Sullivan dragged me down to Kienyo's subterranean Lower East Side lair. Kienyo co-produced this CD which features 14 smoking tracks of Baile Funk. Baile Funk is a dance music genre out of Brazil which is a melange of Electro, Rap, and Reggae, with a healthy infusion of Brazilian spice. Want a taste? Try this. It's called "Superpoderas," featuring Gaiola Das Popozudas.

Knitting Factory Thursday, May 12
Come see my good friends the Creamsicles and I rock the Knitting Factory Tap Room, 74 Leonard Street, this Thursday at 8:30 PM. Erzsi Pongo and I will introduce the band with a brutally funny skit.
The Creamsicles play sweet delicious rock and roll music, the kind of music you kids love. Don't take my word for it, have a listen.. Come celebrate the infernal, I mean eternal, mystery of rock and roll with us.

drop the hotdog, get a freevlog
Are you sitting around miserably filling the void in your life with processed meat? No? Well, are you just a little bit bored? No? Perhaps you feel like stretching yourself creatively just a little bit and sharing that stretch with the universe? Yes! Well you are in luck. There is now a fun, easy online tutorial that takes you through every step of creating your own free videoblog. Ryanne Hodson and Michael Verdi created this tutorial which takes you through every step in the process. What you will need is a camera that shoots video (a digital still camera that shoots video is just fine, or a fancier one works too), a computer with a video editing program (both Mac OSX and Windows XP come with free editing software), and an internet connection (high speed is preferable, but you can do it with dial up). So what are you waiting for. Drop the hot dog, make a freevlog.

Teaching Comics to Vlog
So I did my vlogging community service today helping teach some new comers how to create their own vlogs at a vlog workshop out in Queens. I got paired up with two comedians I had invited. I was so happy to get them started.
One of them got home and posted still another vlog entry. His name is Bob Thompson. He is a mild mannered friendly guy. As with many people he reveals a hidden side when vlogging (and that's a good thing). His latest post is a disturbing but funny song about Rosie O'Donell. I happen to have warm feelings toward Rosie, as she contributes a lot to the school where I work in Manhattan, but I have to admit that I laughed at Bob's impersonation of the former talk show host, even if I don't subscribe to his advice on how to handle her. Anyway, it's funny. Go check it out.
