Back From the Hinterlands

I made it back from Utah where I was honeymooning. Nothing like dodging lightning bolts and forest fires in sun blasted desert canyons to get the post wedding party rolling. Now engaged in a mad scramble to send out thank you notes, buy furniture, and return stuff to people and corporations.

Shot some crazy video qut in the hinterlands. Stay tuned. Meanwhile, I'll be performing with the sweet delicious rock trio The Creamsicles in Manhattan and the Hamptons:

The Day After

Finally finished 3 days of wedding insanity. Friday: legally married at the Municipal Building, wedding rehearsal in the park, rehearsal dinner, bachelor party. Ended up outside my apartment extremely inebriated at 5AM. Realized I didn't have keys with me. Taxi to harlem, slept on friends floor as the sun rose. Woke at 7:30AM.

Went home 9AM. Saturday afternoon went to 40 person pre-wedding picnic in Central Park. After that, picked up wheel chairs downtown, went home and helped prepare for next days festivities. Went to bed 2AM.

Awoke 6AM. 9AM picked up van, met groomsmen, loaded van with chairs, guitars, liquor, etc. and drove to bride's parents house in queens. Noon, through feats of valor, cunning, charm, and financial generosity, penetrated my bride's parents house which was guarded by cousins and bridesmaids. 1PM, performed tea ceremony with bride's parents.

1:15 PM drove to Conservatory Garden in central park. 2PM Unloaded gear and set up for ceremony. 3 PM did the ceremony. It's fun to kiss someone you love while masses of onlookers applaud. Recommended. 4-4:30 posed for photos.

4:30 headed to Cantonese banquet hall in Queens. 5:30-6:30 set up for banquet. 6:30-8PM, greeted guests, watched as my bride attempted to overcome the twisted lameness of the banquet hall management who, inexplicably would not let our DJ enter the DJ booth (this after having a previous meeting with them about letting us bring him in to do his thing). Was unable to help much with this, as I do not speak Cantonese. 8PM Finally, lubricated with extra cash, the management let our DJ work. The banquet begins. 3 hours of dancing, games, toasts, thirteen courses, cake cutting, drinking, and Hava Nagilah, pack up van and head back to the city. 1:30 AM, unload van contents into our apartment. 2AM, return van. 2:30 sleep.

Though this was an exausting 72 hours, it was wonderful. We could not have done this without so much help from our friends and families. Thank you so, so much.

I'm happy that I captured some key behind the scenes moments with my video camera and look forward to putting some snippets on the web in a few weeks.

I'll be offline for a week as my wife and I recuperate near Bryce Canyon in Utah. Take care.

Jonny On Cable

I am happy to announce that my long incubating cable Television show, "Off, Off, Off, Vegas," is about to debut on MNN going direct to over 600,000 households in the media capital of the universe, Manhattan. I host the show with the help of rocker and raconteur John Sully, of The Creamsicles. The first show airs at 11PM, Wednesday, June 22, on Channel 57. If you are not in the city, you can watch it over the internet, live, here. In this episode we rap about marriage, black holes, and cannibalism, with a little Utah thrown in for balance.

Pongo Pokes Back

My good friend and comedy partner Erzsi Pongo was just featured local NYC Fox News. She was abused, arrested, and incarcerated overnight in handcuffs by the cops for draping her legs over the corner of subway seat and not carrying legal identification. She was taking the subway home early in the morning when police entered her subway car and arrested her and a gaggle of sleeping homeless guys. Finally, hours later, she was released from her cell with a court date. I'm glad Erzsi is getting some media on this, because we need to shed light on this type of wretched police behavior and the politicians who enable it. Read more about her ordeal here.

Inside Crying While Eating

Watch video Length: 3.5 minutes. Size: 10.5 megs. Format: Quicktime

Recently I chatted with the creators of the weirdly addictive website, cryingwhileeating.com, Casimir Nozkowski and Dan Engber, who created the site as part of the Contagious Media Showdown. If you haven't checked out their site yet, do. Or better yet, send them a video of yourself crying while eating.

Bye Bye Teachers

Excellent article in the New York Times June 1 about P.S. 111 in Hell's Kitchen, where I used to substitute teach on a regular basis. The article uses P.S. 111 as an example of why so many city schools have a hard time hanging on to experienced teachers. As someone who worked at the school and knows most of the people cited in the article, I can only sadly concur with it's portrayal of that school's problems. I benefited from the difficult working conditions as it led to frequent teacher absences. This created a demand for subs such as myself. I have some good memories from 111. I used to bring in weird musical instruments to differentiate myself from the other subs. One of my favorite memories: Turning around from the blackboard to see a 7th grader flying a homemade kite out the window.

One year, the 7th grade Math teacher broke her leg, so I subbed for her for that last, hot, unairconditioned month. Things went from chaotic to insane after a few weeks. In total exasperation I gasped to the students as they left class," I don't know if I can take this much longer." One kid looked me in the eye and said, "C'mon Mr. Goldstein. You think you feel bad? We have to come here every day. Imagine how we feel."
