Vlogging for K-12 Teachers

As some of you may know, one of my trades is teaching. Teachers can be very isolated in their practice, which is a drag because teachers can learn so much from each other. So now that I am going to integrate vlogging into teaching, and know some other folks doing similar things, I thought it would be nice to have an online discussion group for people combining vlogging and teaching kids. If you want to join the discussion, check it out.

Editing Rushkoff Footage

I'm editing the footage Matt Culliford shot of my interview with Douglas Rushkoff. It's so awesome. Not to make it all about me, but I look pretty good in a tie. Anyway, Rushkoff is a hoot. I think I'll post it in it's entirety on the internet archive, put little snippets on jonnygoldstein.com, wearethemedia.com, and maybe a few other places. Coming soon!

Vlog Soup is Delish

One of the questions I hear a lot is, "I know there's tons of great content on videoblogs, but how do I find it?" New York Times featured vlogger, Steve Garfield, helps answer this with his semi-regular round up of his favorite recent vlog entries, Vlog Soup. I'm proud to have one of my recent vlog posts ladled into the Vlog Soup vat. Bon appetit.

Soho Meet the Vloggers Footage

WATM.mtv.jpg

Ryanne Hodson edited some footage from the latest Meet the Vloggers event at the SOHO Apple Store. I'm in the mix, along with a bunch of other disciples of vlog, testifying to the power of personal media. Ryanne is a master editor, and it shows in this little gem. Take a look at this clip, and you too will say amen.

Jonny and Ryanne Vlog Europe Interview Remix

jonnyryanremixpic.jpg

Watch Video
Format: Quicktime. Size: 8.1 Megs Duration 1:50

I was too impoverished to go to Vlog Europe 2005, but I still got to interview Ryanne Hodson using the magic of digital video. I shot myself asking a bunch of questions and spliced those in with footage of Ryanne shot by herself and XOLO.TV. If you would like to make your own Vlog Europe interview, feel free to use my interview kit, or if you're feeling industrious, make your own. And there's lots of vlog Europe footage here, all remixable under a Creative Commons license. I did the interview under the umbrella of wearethemedia.com, a splendid blog which I contribute to now and again.

Slowly, like a slug on flypaper, newyorkhumor.com is oozing from my distracted mind into web reality. The site isn't up yet, but I just created this video segment which shows the type of thing that will be on the site. This is an interview with comedian Angry Bob, with a 2-second Appearance from Tony Muni. We were hanging outside the Village Lantern sometime earlier this year. Hope to have the site up in a couple of weeks. Meanwhile, enjoy!

Wake Me Up When September Ends

Fellow vlogger Zadi Diaz just made a video setting Katrina news footage to a Green Day song. Hard to watch, but great stuff. It really brought the horror of the whole situation home to me. It just got a mention in the New York Times, so go ahead and be one of the tens of thousands to take a look.

Come Rock With Us @ Don Hill's

I got up at 4AM for the last two days to work in Jersey as a teaching artist. And last night I was up until 12:30AM videoblogging a hunger relief fundraiser I went to. That means I'm running on 7.5 hours of sleep in the last two days. And in an hour I have to go to work at my other teaching job. Tonight, the fun will really start rolling as I open for my pals The Creamsicles as they rock Don Hill's.

What I'm saying is, If I can make it, so can you. Plus, it's gonna roooooock.

One Big Table

Watch Video, Size: 6.5 megs. Duration: 1:23 Format: Quicktime

I recently had the pleasure of attending a One Big Table Potluck. One Big Table Potlucks are happening all over the country to raise money for America's Second Harvest, a hunger relief organization which is stretched to the limit helping people in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Some of the recipes from these potlucks will wind up in a cookbook by Molly O'Neill, former food columnist for the New York Times. I interviewed Molly in the hallway in between sampling the yummy potluck eats.

Bummed

So I was all jazzed about the possibility of teaching videoblogging to high school kids. I talked with an organization that was all psyched to have me do so. The thing is, it is taking them longer than they thought to coordinate the details of where I would work, and I couldn't wait until they knew. So I took another job. But I am bummed. I was so looking forward to this. Good thing is, there is a strong possibility I will be able to work with them after the holidays. And I love the job that I took, teaching non-electronic art, so it is not so bad.

Meanwhile, today, I am out in Central Jersey as a teaching artist for a corporate training seminar. I'm working for Erroyo, helping their client develop television program ideas and create a visual identity for their show proposals. Meeting some great fellow artists out here, a comic book artist/writer, an art director, a children's book illustrator, and others. Very fun group.

Good Day

Interviewed Douglas Rushkoff this morning, spoke to a CUNY journalism class about videoblogging this afternoon, and will host my cable show, Off, Off, Off, Vegas, tonight on Channel 56 at 10PM EST. For those who want to check it out but don't live in Manhattan, catch it online at mnn.org. Thanks Matt Culliford for videoing the Rushkoff thing and Randolphe Wicker for shooting the CUNY event. I'll get the Rushkoff footage up in the next week or so.

These links are for Greg Morris' Journalism class at CUNY, and anyone else who wants to learn more about how videoblogs are being used to do citizen journalism and advocacy. I'll be speaking to Greg's class in about 1 hour. Yikes! Seeya later, gotta go.

****Written after class****Thanks for having me. Really enjoyed it. Hope the links are helpful to those of you who would like to learn more. NYC is a big center of this new medium, so there is quite a scene to tap into, should you desire to do so. Be sure to drop me a line if you have any more questions. You can reach me here.

FireAnt is a free program that you download to your computer (PC or Mac) which lets you subscribe to video from videoblogs. The difference between it and mefeedia is that this downloads video directly to your computer, which can be a good thing if you want to watch them when you aren't connected to the internet. The trade off is that the videos can take up space on your hard drive and you will have to
delete them every now and then.

Vlogsanity

My life is just vlogsane. Just finished the panel presentation I organized on videoblogging at the Tysons Corner Apple Store just outside of D.C. Monday morning interviewing media guru, author, and fractally fantastic dude, Douglas Rushkoff about his current projects and his take on vlogging. Monday afternoon giving a presentation to a CUNY journalism class about vlogging. Then Monday night, I dive back into old media to host the Manhattan cable show "Off, Off, Off, Vegas." Bust out the straight jacket: I'm going vlogsane.

Gilford Gold

I struck gold yesterday. While at a potluck an older woman invited my friend and me to visit her next door apartment to look at some pictures. Her name was Madeline Lee Gilford. She said her husband's name was Jack and that he had been in the movies. "Don't worry, you'll recognize him." So we go over there and the place was plastered with framed pictures of broadway shows and movies, along with photos and paintings. Jack was in many of them, next to people like Zero Mostel, James Garner, Chita Rivera, and silent movie stars the Gish sisters. He was in "A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum," "Cocoon," and a bunch of other movies and plays. His career was interrupted when he was blacklisted in the 50's, but he hung in there and reemerged professionally in a big way later in life appearing in all kinds of TV and movie works. Anyway, it was fascinating listening to Madeline who also is a show biz veteran. The best thing, was that got this all on video, so I'll be putting it up by and by. Such a fun New York experience.

I Wish

I wish I could sit around all day and make vlogs and watch, write, and talk about vlogs. OK, the odd shower would be nice too. But I could videoblog that too. Anyway, this means I a) Have to win the lottery, or b) Have to make some money from the above activities. I don't want to jinx myself, but it looks like I may be getting some paid work teaching kids to videoblog. Yes. I'll keep y'all posted on this. Meanwhile the unpaid speaking gigs are piling up---Various Apple Stores, CUNY, the Chelsea Art Museum, and so on. And just like my unpaid teaching of vlogging may be turning into paid teaching, maybe some of my unpaid speaking will turn into paid speaking. So things are moving slowly towards that wish. I wish, I wish, I wish...Hey I am!

Or just upload your media to the Vlog Europe Press Pool and the vlogging masses can do the remixing for you.

September 12

So it's four years and one day since the day I saw the World Trade Center collapse from my safe vantage point on the West Side highway. And it's two years and some change since our our president commanded our troops to go fight a war that had nothing to do with the September 11 attack. Beautiful September weather today, just like four years ago.

People Who Rock#3:Raymond Kristiansen

Raymond Kristiansen is a vlogger I have gotten to know a little bit in different ways since January. When I briefly met him at Vloggercon in New York City, I was impressed by his goal of using videoblogging to energize the youth outreach of his political party in Norway. Since then I have gotten to know him a little better via his vlog, the Yahoo Videoblogging Group, and vlogger teleconferences. Raymond is a person who rocks, and I'm happy to report that he's on the front page of the BBC Tech Page right now for his videoblogging efforts. Worth a look. Or if you would rather listen, follow this link and go to the end of the segment to hear a feature about rockin' Raymond.

Pentagon City Meet the Vloggers

I met some great people while teaching people about videoblogging at the Pentagon City Apple Store. Cedric Baker is an artist and photographer who used to live in New York City. He has tons of photos from the early hiphop days---Afrika Bambaataa and all those cats. He's looking to get his art online and start doing some video too.

Then I met this 19 year old guy named Jordy who seemed very interested in the whole videoblogging thing. He was visiting from the Netherlands. When I asked him the purpose of his visit to the USA, he told me he was trying out for the best pro soccer team in North America, D.C. United. He said he wished he had been vlogging all his tryouts for professional teams around the world. I bet soccer crazed kids (and more than a few adults) would love to see this kind of behind the scenes footage. Anyway, I pointed him to the right online resources and gave him my email, so I hope he will follow through on this.

Hanging out in Pentagon city was a trip. You see the odd soldier in fatigues with ultra-polished combat boots. Guess you don't want to be caught by higher-ups without well shined boots! I imagine there is a direct relationship between proximity to the Pentagon and combat boot shininess.

Rembrandt

Cedric Baker drew this picture of Rembrandt. I met Cedric at the Apple Store in Pentagon City. In addition to his drawing and painting, Cedric does photography. He has an especially rich collection of photos he took of the early hiphop scene in New York City, replete with shots of legends like Afrika Bambaata. I hope he can start blogging them soon.

Wedding Chronicles 3: The Picnic

Watch Video, Size: 4 megs. Duration: 56 seconds Format: Quicktime

Just to keep myself from going crazy from absorbing 24/7 Katrina coverage, I edited this bit of video from the picnic right before our wedding. Thanks to all who made it out to central park. We loved hanging out with you. And if you weren't there, you can still get a taste. Just don't touch the olives---they're mine.

No Joke

Today is the first day I have watched any video from New Orleans. I'm watching live streaming news from a New Orleans TV station WDSU, which has relocated to MIssissippi for the duration, and it is so awful. The frazzled newscasters are trying so hard to find silver linings to all the nightmarish stories they are reporting, it hurts to watch.

Posted by Jonny at 06:17 PM | Comments (0)

Craigslist and New Orleans

I couldn't help taking a peek at Craigslist to see how people were using it in New Orleans in this time of crisis. Here's some excerpts:

As you would expect, there are many missing person notices:

"Steve has bright blonde hair and a great sense of humor. Mary has black hair and a thick Nawlins accent. We love them and we want to know if they are okay."

There are also some good samaritan postings, like this one:

"I am a merchant seaman and my ship is stuck here due to the hurricane. I have been pedaling my bike and noticed many dogs who were fenced in and need food. I can give them scraps from our galley and maybe I can get some food from the Walmart on Lapalco. But I may not see your dog, so if you want me to check up on them give me an e mail"

And a few happy stories:

"Everybody looking for somebody. I have just heard from the last three family members that were missing. I don't know details of what they have been through, but they are all alive and safe now."
