Craigslist and New Orleans

September 1st, 2005 · 1 Comment

I couldn’t help taking a peek at Craigslist to see how people were using it in New Orleans in this time of crisis. Here’s some excerpts:

As you would expect, there are many missing person notices:

“Steve has bright blonde hair and a great sense of humor. Mary has black hair and a thick Nawlins accent. We love them and we want to know if they are okay.”

There are also some good samaritan postings, like this one:

“I am a merchant seaman and my ship is stuck here due to the hurricane. I have been pedaling my bike and noticed many dogs who were fenced in and need food. I can give them scraps from our galley and maybe I can get some food from the Walmart on Lapalco. But I may not see your dog, so if you want me to check up on them give me an e mail”

And a few happy stories:

“Everybody looking for somebody. I have just heard from the last three family members that were missing. I don’t know details of what they have been through, but they are all alive and safe now.”

Thanks for helping us keep in touch with folks down in New Orleans. It is nice to know that there is more going on than the images of looting, insanity and swat teams with semi-automatics that we see in the mainstream media.
