Snakes on a train
I was on the subway passing through Harlem yesterday when I heard two elderly women talking about the coming movie attraction Snakes on a Plane. This movie is going to make so much money. They've got the Jonny demographic, they've got the Harlem old lady demographic, that's covering a lot of territory already. I can already see the sequels----Snakes on a Bus, Snakes on a Ferry, Snakes on a Municipal Light Rail System.

Weird Andy Carvin Syncronicity
This morning, I spoke with a fellow named Andy Carvin for the first time. We're going to be on a panel together at Vloggercon 2006 in June. He lives in Boston, and since I will up there this weekend, I thought it would be cool to get together for coffee. So I called him up to set it up.
A few hours later I went to the radiopensource.org site and he was a featured guest on tonight's show. I'm currently listening his voice streamed from WNYC.
Isn't that a little weird? I never talked to the guy, then the day I do talk to him, he's also on one of my favorite radio shows?
What's your latest weird syncronicity?

Orchid You Not: It's My Birthday

Yeah, it was my birthday on Sunday. What better way to celebrate than by checking out the orchid show at the Bronx Botanical Garden? I love that place, but I think they need to liven up the cloudforest room with a couple of anacondas.

Claymation, Bronx Style

The Bronx is known for hiphop, baseball, and now...Claymation!!!
I am so proud of the videos my students are making up in the Bronx in the BX21 program.
Here's a short work by Sankung.
And here's a longer one by Kameshia.
Comments are like gold, so if you dig their work, leave a nugget.

Google Juice: I'm #3 for "Jonny" and "Goldstein" this morning

So anyone who knows me well knows that I have a bad habit: frequent autogoogling. Something in the web-o-sphere has changed this morning, either Google's ranking algorithm, or someone is throwing some serious links, 'cause when I googled "jonny" I was ranked third, and even more crazy, I got the same result when I googled "goldstein."
OK, you're not impressed. Fine. But let me enjoy this brief moment of googlacious glory. Aaaaahhhhh.
Now Google juice may taste good, but it contains a lot of sugar, so now that I've drunk my fill, I better go brush my teeth.

Mikey Sklar in the New Yorker
One of my favorite ex-New Yorkers, Mikey Sklar, keeps his media streak going strong with a Talk of the Town piece about his RFID chip implanting, fire breathing sculpture building, moving to Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, lifestyle. And the tone of the article is so freakin' blase. I guess everything is so hyped nowadays that stylistic restraint is the new dayglo. If you missed my video of Mikey talking about getting the chip implanted into his hand and are into understanding the motives of an implantee, check it out here. I think of it as "Behind the Implant." Or you can watch the only slightly gruesome video Mikey shot of the proceduree. Anyway, big ups to Mikey for maximal media penetration.

detachedbmx.com: interactive bmx webzine

I've met some great people at my job teaching videoblogging in the Bronx. One of these people is Thad Allender. Along with teaching youth to videoblog, Thad is freelance photographer, web designer, and freestyle BMX veteran. All that, plus he's got an entrepreneurial streak in him. Roll these together and you've got detachedbmx.com. It's a great example of design, combining a nice look and concept with heavy user involvement. The site lets users upload articles, video, and photos. It lets users create their own online stores, and forums, and report on their own local bmx scenes. Thad used Drupal as a content management system to create the site. He put in the hours on Drupal forums to get it to work the way he needed, combined it with his own knowledge of the freestyle bmx scene, and infused it with his own aesthetic to create a really impressive site. Even if you aren't a bmx head, it's fascinating to check out this slice of culture.

vlogyourface.com
The Meerkat Media Collective in New York City has just put up a fun site---vlogyourface.com. Here's the deal: You shoot a one minute video of your face and upload it via their site. You don't even have to compress it. Just wait a day or two for them to process your vid, and it will be up there for the world to gaze at longingly, in the company of a bunch of other faces. The site is a day old and they already have almost 50 faces you can browse. One thing, the name, while catchy, is not accurate in a strict sense. I wouldn't exactly call it a vlog. But who cares? It's a blast browsing the humanity. So browse a little and if you have a little teeny, tiny exhibitionist streak (and you know you do), send them a clip of your own uniquely sexy punim (that's Yiddish for face).

Renee Michelle is Styling
My friend, Physics grad student, Renee Michelle has an impeccible style sense. She just started a videoblog from whence she shares low budget style tips with the lucky masses. Check out her first installment of Styling With Renee Michelle, where I learned I should wear a tight skirt to the thrift store.

I kicked a rat tonight.
I was walking home yammering on the cell phone with my mom when my left foot connected with a soft meaty lump. I saw the rat scurrying away to nurse its bruised side. I just kept moving.

Speaking at "Beyond the Channels" Tonight

I'm one of the speakers at Manhattan Neighborhood Network's "Beyond The Channels" event where we will discuss how advocacy groups can use videoblogging to get their messages out.
It's 6:30-8:30, March 1, 537 West 59th Street. RSVP here.
Here's the blurb from the MNN site:
"An offshoot of blogs, or weblogs, video blogs have video as the primary content and can encompass many genres. While most vloggers use video blogs as a means to document their personal lives or give their opinions about various topics, video blogs can also cover news events, discuss social justice issues or be used as means for advocacy.
Video Blogging has mushroomed over the past two years. It breaks down cultural barriers by distributing alternative media, and will only increase in popularity in 2006. Join Manhattan Neighborhood Network in this event to find out how you can jumpstart online distribution for your project or series. Experts from the field will discuss different genres of vlogging – from the more individualistic narratives to community groups’ organizing video – and walk you through vlogging step by step."
