Katie Couric: Are You Listening? Sayittokatie.com
Watch the video (Quicktime)
Watch the video (Flash)
(Note. I just swapped out the video I had up earlier due to its atrocious audio quality. This one's basically the same, but with better audio).
Katie Couric just instituted a segment on the CBS news called Free Speech. It is a good idea but doesn't go nearly far enough. Basically, she gets big-name people to sound off about something they feel strongly about. She should involve us regular folks in the conversation by creating a website where we can upload our own video opinions, we can vote and comment on each others' opinions, and CBS can use selected opinions from the website in their free speech segment. If you want Katie to open up the conversation, upload a video expressing your opinion about any issue, and tag it "sayittokatie". And check out sayittokatie.com for more info. Special shout out to Jeff Jarvis for the idea, and Steve Garfield for spreading the word.

Digitized With Jonny Goldstein #3: Amanda Congdon Interview

Went out to dinner with Amanda Congdon and her crew as they begin to wend their way across the USA to Los Angeles in their Amanda Across America roadshow. She recounted the various people they had interviewed so far, including a Hudson River Keeper, Atrios, and Jeff Jarvis.
She also talked about why she likes videoblogging so much, and mentioned some of her favorite places to check out video on the web, rabbitbites.com, andycarvin.com, carlweaver.com, Richard Hall, and askaninja.com.
I also got to interview Mario Librandi, who is one of the mobile producers of Amanda Across America. I will put that segment up soon.
Andy Carvin just threw up a nice clip of Amanda and him chatting while strolling by the White House

Go to Jail. No wait. Go to jail again. No, hang on. OK, now go...
Videoblogger Josh Wolf spent a month in jail for not handing over video footage he shot of a political demostration to the Feds. Then they let him out. Then they said he had to go back. Now they are extending his break from jail for two days. Read all about it and watch video here. And for a fascinating tale of what life in Dublin Federal Correctional Facility is like for a twenty something video blogger, check out this video.

Why Alec Saunders Should Vlog
Watch the video There's nothing I like more than a good blog-o-spheric brouhaha, and we have one right now. At an internet media industry event known as VON, Dina Kaplan of Blip.TV challenged text bloggers to become video bloggers. One of them, Andy Abramson, took on the challenge and posted his first video. Alec Saunders, who was less than impressed with Andy's maiden effort, wrote a post addressed to Dina about why he doesn't plan to vlog. Various others have chimed in and I thought I would too, but in video form. Will Alec Saunders vlog? I don't know, but even if I don't persuade him, I enjoyed the wasabi peanuts I ate while shooting this. And that is a nose flute by the way.
Update---Now Dina Kaplan has made her own video about why Alec Saunders should vlog.Posted by Jonny at 08:35 PM | Comments (9)

Bye bye, NYC. Thanks for all the folks who came out to Rudy's!
Watch the video That's my melancholy face there. Randy Wicker, one of the most fearless vloggers out there, made a video documenting my farewell party at Rudy's Bar & Grill. Thanks to Charles Hope, Quin Charity, Marc Maleh, Ivettza Sanchez, Melenie Morgan, and Erzsi Pongo, for making it a night to remember. After the party, I went uptown to crash at John Sully's place. He blew my with some new music he's been working on. OK, I'm heading back down to DC now. I'll miss ya NYC, but I plan to come back a lot, so don't fret.

911 Recollections---Jonny Goldstein
My wife was just complaining to me about all the canned inauthentic blathering that's going on around this anniversary of 9/11/2001. I guess it's inevitable that some people just crank out stuff that's by the numbers, just because it's the thing to do on this day. That's how it goes. Just a job. She appreciates stuff that's grounded in actual particular experience. So here 10 minutes of my memories from my particular experience living in NYC when the terrorists attacked the World Trade Center. My then girlfriend, now wife, lived pretty close. I saw the first building go down and it was like a hallucination, a dream. But we never woke up. Luckily, no one close to me died. Anyway, here are a few of my memories, more for me than for you, maybe for my grandkids, if I ever have any. OK, that's not totally true. If you watch this and you're moved to leave a comment, I'd like that. If not, at least making this helped me feel a little better. Peace.
Added later---My wife doesn't want to watch this. Doesn't want to relive it. I guess that day hit her a lot harder than it hit me.Posted by Jonny at 02:50 PM | Comments (2)

Videoblogger Josh Wolf Out on Bail
Josh Wolf, an independent journalist imprisoned for not turning over video footage to the Feds, is out on bail, pending his appeal. I met Josh at Vloggercon 2006 and he impressed me as a thoughtful, humane, guy.

Learn to produce, distribute, and promote your video with Web Video 101
If you are reading this, chances are you've been here before. You may be a videoblogger yourself, or you may be a fan, or a relative...or a stalker. Hey whatever, it's all good to me (especially now that I've moved to a new city and
you stalkerazzi can't find me!). But if you fall into that subsection of folks that dig what Jonny does and wishes that you too were participating in the web video revolution that's rocking the known universe, if only you knew how, have I got a treat for you! You can join in the fun. Got a broadband internet connection? Got a computer? Got a camera that can shoot video (yeah, if that point and shoot digital photo camera shoots video that counts)? Take my class! OK, here's the official schpiel:I'm delighted to announce that I will be teaching a new course, Web Video 101, online at Phovi.com starting September 26. My goal in Web Video 101 is to help you participate in the revolution in web video production and distribution that is rocking the media world. If you have broadband access to the Internet you can take the course, no matter where you live. The objective for this course is to get you comfortable with producing, distributing, and promoting web video. The course will explore topics such as web video formats, compression, videoblogging, podcasting, audience building, content development, branding, remixing, and video conversations.
You will come out of the course with your own videoblog and video podcast, an episode of your own show, with its own intro and outro, and familiarity with web video production, distribution, and promotion.
You will also become familiar with social networks around web video, where people connect online and in-person. You will learn about how video connnects with blogging, and how people have conversations over time using video.? If this sounds like a lot of ground we're covering, you're right, it is! There is so much exciting stuff going on, and we're going to explore far and wide. At the same time, I will break things down into easy-to-understand chunks, so no one will be overwhelmed.
We will have live weekly class meetings online, where we will discuss the topic of the week and share our work with each other in a supportive, positive atmosphere. On the class website you can refer to text, image, and multimedia class materials to help you complete that week's project. And of course, I'll be available to help you in between classes.
This is an exhilerating time. Video cameras, editing tools, web services, and Internet connectivity have developed to the point where almost everyone can become a producer and have their own "channel." I would be delighted to be your guide to becoming a web video producer. Are you ready? Let's go!
