Reinventing the Finale

hastaresize.jpg

Whew. Just did my last live webcast of Reinventing Television. Unfortunately, the technical issues involved in having guests appear on the show from remote locations prevented us from having decent quality audio and video, and that made it tough to see how to make it a viable commercial venture at this point. I really enjoyed it and had a rockin' cast of audience members, and guests. More thoughts on this at the Reinventing Television site.

Great moments in talk show history--Cassius Clay meets Liberace

Steve Bryant of the Hollywood Reporter has found some great snippets of talk show history. I've put one of them below, where Cassius Clay recites poetry backed by Liberace on the Tonight Show, but if you have a few minutes, go to Steve's blog and check out the several clips he has assembled which span the last 50 years. They are priceless.

Ed Tyler

EdTylyer.jpg

Ed Tyler died a few days ago, by his own hand. Ed was afflicted by bipolar disorder, and finally succumbed to it, taking his own life. My wife was Ed's roommate last year, and I spent 20-30 days in the apartment with them over those months as I bounced back and forth between NYC and DC. Ed and I weren't close friends, but I liked Ed a lot. He was an accomplished visual artist, dancer, and one of Washington DC's preeminent choreographers who had his work performed at places like the Kennedy Center. Ed made beautiful, unexpected things. At his memorial service yesterday we were surrounded by his paintings, photos, and dance videos. Ed managed to squeeze a lot into his time on earth, including at one point running away with a circus! My condolences go out to Ed's family, colleagues, and friends. He was a beautiful man and I'm glad I got to know him a little. I hope we can get a better handle on bipolar disorder, an affliction which screws up so many lives.

The Joke Project, Thurs, 10PM Eastern on Reinventing Television

jokeprojectcollage1.jpg

Just in case you have not heard, I am now producing and hosting a live, interactive, web video talk show called Reinventing Television for Phovi where I talk to players and innovators in the rapidly mutating video production and distribution space.

We're having show #5 tonight featuring Marc Lesser, the Chief Joke Officer of The Joke Project as our special guest.

The Joke Project consists of daily videos of regular folks telling their favorite jokes. The The Joke Project team has been cranking out these videos five days a week for several months, and they are rapidly building buzz and audience. One of the things that is cool is that they have both joke-tellers who are naturally born jokesters, and they have people on who are as stiff as 2x4 boards. Either way, it's fascinating to watch the jokes unfold. Watching a badly told joke is like watching a trainwreck---Voyeuristic fun. It's really as much documentary and oral history as it is comedy. Naturally, some of the jokes are hilarious and well told. That's great too.

I'm interested in finding out about TJP's workflow, the genesis of the idea, and the business side of creating a project like this. They also have a really well thought out website, offer lots of formats, and have a joke rating system which ranges from Squeeky Clean to X-tremely naughty.

Here are the details for folks who want to check out the show:

When: 10PM, Thurs, Nov 2
Where: Right here.
