Jonny Goldstein Meets Gareth Branwyn in DC

Just went to a Meda Bistro Schmoozathon in DC, and much to my surprise, the first person I meet is Gareth Branwyn, who worked on the print version of Boing Boing, which predates the current web incarnation of the same name. Gareth currently contributes to Make Magazine, I.D, Esquire, and blogs at Street Tech. I had a blast picking his brain about the early days of the Well . He also informed me that a DC chapter of Dorkbots has started up, which delights me. I also got my schmooz on with a bunch of other folks, several of whom made noises about being interested in DC Media Makers, so that was good too. Had some funny conversations with people who wanted to move to NYC. So very touching. DC pays better and has more work, but it's just not sex-in-the-city-ish enough for some folks. Hey, I feel that. I like living in a Manolo Blahnik rich environment myself.

New Mexico Lox

Watch the video
For a town of 7,000 people the middle of the Chihuahuan desert, Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, has a lot to offer, even lox and bagels. They were missing a crucial ingredient though, so I had to accessorize with what was at hand. That's what this video is about.

How did I get to the obscure hamlet of Truth or Consequences? My friends friends Mikey Sklar (who recently implanted an RFID chip into his hand) and Wendy Tremayne (The creator of the Swap-O-Rama-Rama events) moved there 9 months ago from NYC and they invited a bunch of their friends to come visit them over New Years. Truth or Consequences (known as T or C to the locals) is experiencing an influx of creative people from both coasts, attracted by the desert scenery, cheap real estate, and abundant natural hot springs. I thought T or C would make for a rich documentary subject, and I was not disappointed. The town is a mix of retirees, devout Christians (23 churches for 7,000 people), meth addicts, artists, New Age crystal gazers, and groovy entrepreneurs.

Mikey and Wendy bought an RV park in the middle of town where they are building an Eco Lodge made with green building techniques using papercrete, shipping containers, and insulating industrial nanopaint, to make a "Green Hotel." The Eco Lodge will cater to people interested in spirituality, yoga, green technology, and techno-art. And the Eco-Lodge will also have a 108.1 degree outdoor hot spring to soak in. It should be open for business by September of 2007.

Lot's of interesting folks converged for New Years, including Charles Hope, Limor Fried, Phil Torrone, Victoria Scott, and Scott Kildall. I really wanted to interview Mikey about the Eco Lodge, but he got sick and I wasn't able to. But I did get lots of good footage, pics, and even did some landscape drawing. And of course my research into the area included lots of soaking in outdoor hot springs with my wife. All in all, a truthfully consequential trip to Truth or Consequences.
