I had the pleasure of interviewing Bruce Sterling at David Isenberg’s Freedom to Connnect conference last week. In addition to being one of the founding members of the cyberpunk movement in science fiction, Bruce is a journalist, blogger, teacher, and idea evangelist who hops from conference to conference soaking soaking up and influencing social, artistic, and technological trends. In this video he talks about his interest in starting a new hybrid media social networking presence on the web, echo boomers, tracking buzz versus influencing culture, and his interest in “Internet manufacturing.” He mentioned that “There aren’t really words for it yet. But I like places where there aren’t words.”
Bruce mentioned “Fine art fabbers,” who he knows, artists who are using programmable fabrication machines in their work. I met a couple of these folks over New Years, Phil Torrone and Limor Fried of Make Magazine, but I didn’t mention it to Mr. Sterling, as it looked like his thoughts were already swirling toward some other place by the end of the interview.
