Nonprofit Technology Conference Video Geekout with Kanter, Carvin, and Goldstein

April 5th, 2007 · No Comments

I’m very excited to be part of the team running the Nonprofit Technology Conference Video Geekout with web 2.0 titans Beth Kanter and Andy Carvin. Beth is a “Trainer, coach and consultant to nonprofits in the area of technology use.” Andy currently is a web 2.0 strategist for NPR. In the morning we will give a presentation teaching representatives from nonprofit organizations how to videoblog; in the afternoon we will preside over a hands on, drop-in workshop where we will help people make a video and put it online.

Online video is a powerful communications medium, I am glad that nonprofits are beginning to recognize that. I have worked for a number of nonprofit ventures from humble to high powered—a homeless shelter, a national youth organization, a technology education organization, and an issue advocacy group, to name a few. Videoblogging could help all these organizations with fundraising, issue advocacy, staff development, and a myriad of other areas.

Above is an example of a powerful web video made with simple tools and minimal production effort. In it, Amir Dar of the Idealist, kicks off a worldwide series of meetings for the Imagine a Better World Initiative. A few hours spent making and uploading a video viewed by hundreds (maybe thousands) of volunteers and stakeholders, giving them some direction and inspiration and common experience—That’s time well spent.

Above is another use of video by the National Community Reinvestment Coalition, who had a prominent guest, Sen. Hillary Clinton, speak at their annual meeting. Why not capture this and put it online? So that’s what they did, mining her talk for choice nuggets and putting them on their site.

If you are attending the NTC conference and are interested in developing online video for your organization, stop on by.
