Jim Long, one of my fellow DC Media Makers, is an NBC news cameraman. Whenever he covers a story, he sends out quick updates on the action to his “friends” (AKA people who choose to get his updates) using his cell phone and a service called Twitter. Here is Wikipedia’s description of Twitter:
Twitter is a social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to send “updates” (text-based posts, up to 140 characters long) via SMS, instant messaging, the Twitter website or an application such as Twitterrific
Jim’s Twitter posts are manna for media junkies, fly-on-the-wall observations from a man in the middle of the action. Here is a screen capture of Jim latest posts, from Virginia Tech:
