I live in a big apartment complex in Mount Rainier Maryland, in a fairly urban environment, about 1000 feet from the boundry of Washington DC. My neighbors are pretty wild, with loud music and parties and so on, but they aren’t the only wildlife. A fork of the Anacostia river runs by my apartment complex and there are beavers living right under the footbridge I walk over on the way home from the subway! My wife called me on my cell and told me to take a break from my computer to see them. And there they were. One was on the bank munching on vegetation, the other swam around and then disappeared in its beaver fort. I’d never seen a beaver outside a zoo. There were two El Salvadoran guys on the bridge. I tried to communicate what the beaver was, in Spanish. “It builds wooden things in rivers that make lakes” was a rough translation of my explanation. One of them said, they had a dog in their apartment. I was like, no, it is no dog. It’s a beaver. “Beeber” he said. Close enough. The beavers did their thing, seemingly oblivious of traffic noise from the nearby road.
What totally bites is that the digital pics and videos I shot are not viewable–They got corrupted. So you’ll have to take my word for it. If I see them again, I’ll take some more pics.

I wanna see the pix… I’m a little suspect of you ‘city folk’ being able to identify wildlife!
