Camping: fall in love with menial labor all over again

May 22nd, 2007 · 1 Comment

What’s great about camping is that it makes menial labor seem so much more tolerable. There is so much menial work involved in camping. Pack, unpack, set up tent, cook, wash dishes, make fire, clean up camp, and on and on. There’s nothing else really competing for your attention, so you kind of get into a groove and it’s almost fun. So what’s the big deal? The big deal is that this attitude toward menial labor carries on after you get home, and that adds a lot to your quality of life. You can’t get out of menial labor. Wash clothes, clean house, wash dishes, clean office: it’s unavoidable. A big slice of life consists of boring stuff we do with our hands. If camping makes it easier to do this stuff, hallelujah. That’s my big insight after spending my weekend in the woods.
