Egads. It’s a little scary to actually admit that there is something that I really want professionally. I have done a lot of things—I was a whitewater raft guide, counselor in a homeless shelter, director of a program in the Bronx where we taught 100 teens how to videoblog, video artist…I’ve done a lot of very challenging things. But this one I want more. So it’s scarier to admit it. I want to be a professional talk show host. That’s it. So how do I get there?
1. Well, I guess just realizing that that’s what I want is a big step. OK. Check.
2. I need to host a show. OK, thanks to the power of the internet, I am doing that every Wednesday, 9PM Eastern, right here on jonnygoldstein.com. OK, check.
3. I need to get someone to pay me. Mmmmmm…..In order to do that, I’m going to need to step up my game in a bunch of areas. Really this is a business start-up. There are a couple of ways to get paid. One is to get hired by some media entity to host a show, another is to find sponsors myself or with the help of a middleman.
4. I’ve got to step up some elements in my show—-Need a good backdrop, and a good video intro, and outro. Need to get better sound. I’d love to start with a little monologue. That involves writing new stuff every week. Maybe some sound effects would be cool too.
5. Guests. Got to book compelling guests who are in and of themselves connected to communities of fans.
6. Promotion. Over the internet, on the show, and face to face. Got to get myself out there, stay involved in communities, reach out to new communities.
7. Need to keep it real. Only book guests I find interesting. So far, I have kept that pact with myself. Thanks Gerry T, Beth Kanter, DC Media Makers, Bill Cammack, Irina Slutsky, Schlomo Rabinowitz, Chris Brogan, Jay Dedman, and Kathryn V. Jones.
8. Day job. Got to keep that going while I get this talk show thing moving.
9. Keep involving my audience/participants. I love getting you into the mix. Heck, this should have been point #1. You rock.
10. Relationships. Got to get this going while not driving important people in my life crazy.
11. And in doing all this stuff, I’m gonna learn. And I like learning. So let the par-tay begin!
OK, that’s it for now. One thing I want to do is document this whole process as I do it. So check back for progress reports. And keep on par-taying!

Thanks for the good wishes. I like doing this so much, might as well see if I can make it my job. Worst case scenario, it gives me focus to keep making the show better.

Hey Jonny,
I think it’s a great step to write down your goals like this and make them public.
The show has been really great lately and I’m looking forward to contributing to your success…

Hey Jonny.
Your show will be spectacular. I can see it already.
I also think it is super cool of you to post your goal online like this. It is something I think we should more often!
Thanks for the inspiration, and I wish you all the best,
Paris

Thanks Paris (and everybody). Took me awhile to realize that this was important enough to me to go public. But now I’m there.
