What You’ve All Been Waiting For, the Jonny Goldstein Endorsement

It’s time to roll out the coveted Jonny Goldstein endorsement for President.

I support (surprise, surprise) Barack Obama for President of the USA.

Basically, I am way to the left of Barack Obama on a lot of stuff (health care: I think we should have a system more like Canada’s, he wants to band-aid the current expensive and wasteful system), and way more libertarian on some other stuff (I opposed Obama’s vote on the 2008 FISA Ammendments Act which gave telecommunications companies immunity after helping the Bush Administration illegally wiretap).

But I certainly am more in sync with Obama’s positions on range of other issues than with McCain (tax policy, womens’ health, education, Iraq war, and on and on).

A huge consideration: temperament and competence. Look at the way McCain has managed his campaign, now look at the way Obama has managed his effort. I do not want a country managed the way McCain has run his campaign.

And all things being equal, I would like to have a president who knows how to surf the web and send email. This may seem trivial, but technology is such a huge part of our society, and it’s only going to increase. We need somebody who gets it in a direct, visceral way.

I will be knocking on doors tomorrow morning reminding Obama supporters to get out and vote. Whoever you vote for, I wish you well. I’m voting for Barack Obama.

Who are you voting for, and why?

I’m voting for Obama for all the same reasons. Additionally, the prospect of a Palin presidency if something were to happen to McCain (who is 72 and has had multiple bouts with melanomas) scares the hell out of me. McCain’s disgraceful behavior in Congress with regard to the search for missing POWs doesn’t impress me one bit, either. http://www.vimeo.com/2089093 jump to 24:50

Johnny - I agree with you on the temperament and competence points. I also think getting technology is key. (Although in McCain’s defense he doesn’t write his own emails because his hands and arms are physically handicapped - the result of his years as a POW.) I do have to say — if you like Canada’s health care system, you should go up there and try and use it sometime. Terrible - long, long waits for even the most basic procedure and overall low quality care. Canadians come down here to get their serious health problems addressed because their own system is so inadequate — and, it’s actually getting worse. Seriously.

    LK,

There are horror stories in every health care system. Bottom line, they spend less AND have better health outcomes.

And if we choose to fund it better than they do, there’ll be less waiting.

I haven’t lived in Canada, but I have lived in the UK and Israel and they all have cheaper, more effective health care systems with universal coverage.

doood! you gotta want the Palin presidency just for the t&a! And it’s been so long since a pres died in office! The intrigue, the mystery. But whatiam really looking forward to is the $5000 (for me and my entire prodigious family) tax break to go out and purchase my own fuckin’ health care. Get the goddamn government off my back! I’d personally rather die then have socialized medicine!
And then there’s war. The more the better. The real driving force for the economy for the last eight years has been military hardware (or the lack thereof). Screw rebuilding the infrastructure when we can build more weaponry. Kick the war effort into overdrive!
    call me.

    Dahveed,

Thanks for the reasoned defense of the Palin/McCain ticket. They should get the End of Days vote. Vote Rapture in ‘08!
