We just visited our friend’s parents who live in rural Ohio to attend their annual pig roast. The man of the house is an engineer and inventor who decided he wanted to turn a fuel tank into a pig roaster. This is my sketch of the homemade device.

Speaking at the GigabitPhilly Press Conference
April 4th, 2010 · 1 Comment
I was proud to have the opportunity to speak at a press conference at City Hall on the topic of Philadelphia’s request for Google to install an ultra high speed data network here in Philly.
That is Mayor Nutter looking at me as I share my thoughts on why Philly would be an ideal testbed […]

Pictures and Words from Richard Saul Wurman at SenseMaker Dialogs
February 18th, 2010 · No Comments
Richard Saul Wurman delighted me when he spoke at the SenseMaker Dialogs last Tuesday in New York City. I remember picking up his book, Information Anxiety for the first time in the early 90’s, a terrified and confident young man, and loving every little bit of it, the provocative micromanifestos, the frequent sidebars, the anecdotes, […]

Bye, bye, Hell’s Kitchen
July 31st, 2009 · 5 Comments
View from my old Apartment in NYC. I handed in my keys yesterday. I have not lived in NYC for awhile, so it was time to let it go. I have a lot of good memories from the period when I lived there.
It was an exciting time in my life. I finished grad school, […]

The Anti-Cult: Cartwheels in a Sari
July 22nd, 2009 · 1 Comment
Over the years, I have had brushes with several cults, but luckily have never been sucked in myself. Back in the mid 90’s while living in Seattle, I went to a “free meditation workshop” sponsored by Sri Chinmoy’s organization, which I had never heard of before then. I enjoyed the workshop, but at the end, […]

Slimming down on Twitter
June 25th, 2009 · 7 Comments
(Visual Notes of Jeremy Epstein’s talk at the 140 Characters Conference)
A few months ago, I started a new Twitter account for my business. The business is very focused on visual communication, so the people I followed were from that field. I really enjoyed that twitter stream, so much more focused than the 1100+ people I […]

My take on torture
April 24th, 2009 · 3 Comments
Amidst the current sturm und drang over whether or not torture was a good idea post 9/11, I feel like I am not hearing an important viewpoint. People argue about whether torture is a useful way to get intelligence from suspects. The preponderance of opinion I have heard from professional interrogators is that it is […]

Sleeping on the Train? You may be my next art model!
February 5th, 2009 · 3 Comments
I love sitting across from someone who nods off on the train. They make perfect models for a quick sketch. This is part of my ongoing series of sketches of people who are using mass transit. So next time you nod off on the train, you may be my next muse.

Michael Phelps and our Societal Dope Delusions
February 2nd, 2009 · 7 Comments
I woke up this morning to see headlines about how Michael Phelps was in danger of loing his multimillion dollar sponsorships because a photo of him taking a bonghit had surfaced.
Can we end this moronic war on marijuana? Last night I spent hours absorbing a mind altering substance while bathing in corporate marketing messages during […]

TransitSketches
January 4th, 2009 · No Comments
I love taking mass transit—subways in particular, but ferries, buses, trains, I dig all these modes of travel. Part of the appeal is all the people arrayed in front of me as models for my sketchy purposes. I thought I’d start documenting these sketches that I make; here are the first installments. Quick little things, […]
